Punyalakshmi: A weekend spent soaking in the cool breeze of Ganges

Keeping the trend from my last post going, this time we will visit another gem of a resort close to Kolkata. With the fresh upsurge in COVID cases and impending lockdowns, I figure this near to home weekend theme is a practical option for us now.

Situated at the banks of river Hooghly, Punyalakshmi Resort is only 48 km from Kolkata. Its location is made special by the fact that you can see the Ganges turning towards The Bay of Bengal from the resort compounds.

The carefully maintained gardens, lawns and paved walking path around the property are all ingredients for a perfect recipe of relaxation. Although, I must warn you, due to its popularity some weekends tend to get a little too crowded and loud.

Punyalakshmi is a premium resort, equipped with all the modern luxuries and comfort that guests need. Rooms come in the form of cottages and suites; each offering their unique set of benefits. The suites with a view of Ganges are particularly more appealing to me personally.

Owing to its proximity to the Ganges, you can witness spectacular sunsets right from the comfort of your room. The paved trail around the garden takes you even closer to the river and during high tides, the water level almost reaches the compound walls.

A pleasant, cool river breeze makes the early mornings and evenings refreshing during summer months. Winters can get quite cold, due to the wind chill, but a very enticing experience none the less. I spent the afternoons lazing on the deck chairs by the pool; reading a book or watching ships sail by in the distance.

The resort is a few hundred meters off the main highway, this helps in nullifying the constant buzz of highway traffic. A thick green cover encapsulates Punyalakshmi in a cocoon of relative silence, unless there is a loud pool side party in the middle of the central lawn.

There is a fully operational bar and equally aristocratic restaurant that act as the main dining hall of the facility. Food is delicious, albeit a little expensive and room service is commendable too. The staff members are usually helpful and enthusiastic to cater to guest’s needs.

If you are a resident of Kolkata, spending a weekend here is a practical way of unwinding without putting yourself at minimal risk of any lockdown related contingencies. The sun, the river and nature will provide you with a welcome change of landscape and the culinary delights will quench your gastronomical cravings.

So, plan out a short weekend at this little gem on the Diamond Harbour, trust me , you will love it!
